Small and medium enterprises are located mainly in the vicinity of large urban agglomerations, near potential markets, well-developed technical and social infrastructure and specialized services. This is why their development is much slower in the marginalized regions where social and economic development is impeded. In these regions supportive action is needed to facilitate the development of the SME sector within their own local environment. The support ought to take into account specific developmental conditions which can be characterised by poor level of social and economic development in such regions and also adjust supportive actions accordingly. The aim of the article is to identify the conditions in which enterprises operate in the marginalized regions and compile a strategy for development of an enterprise that would take into account the specificity of such regions.
