Leszek Dziawgo, prof. dr hab., Ph.D. , Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management, Torun University, Torun, Poland

Objectives

The aim of the elaboration is to indicate the problem of proecological adjustment of modern financial market and present the evaluation of this process from the public point of view.

The idea of CSR already widely implemented in business contains significant ecological components and the proecological evolution of modern economy is a fact. The better effectiveness of this process requires support from financial market. Nowadays many leading banks, investment, and insurance companies maintain or gain clients thanks to the use of environmental aspects in their everyday business or offer financial products connected with financing environmental projects.

However, the question why & how commercial financial institutions could support natural environment proctecion is still quite open. Although the growing proecological engagement of financial institutions is already noticeable, there are a lot of doubts concerning the effectivness of this engagement.

The public proecological pressure on commercial financial institutions is one of the crucial factors pushing financial sector towards modern greening economy. But at the same time the public opinion is also the source of serious doubts concerning the reliability of proecological activities of financial market.

Data / Methods

Over the period of September-October 2009, the survey on public assessment of proecological activities of financial sector was conducted on representative sample of the Polish society. The survey was based on the questionnaire method.

The unique survey was created, ordered and supervised by the Author and conducted by the specialized institute MillwardBrown SMG/KRC.

The survey delivered excellent materials for analysis. Some interactions were verified with the use of statistical methods.

Results

The results of the survey and analysis are certainly not satisfactory for the financial sector in Poland. The public attitude to proecological activities of financial institutions is very critical. However, the conclusions could be useful for creating a conviencing and effective sustainable policy of financial institutions in modern economy & society.
