In the study we estimate a semiparametric hazard models to assess the impact of vocational training on the duration of unemployment spells.

Our research work is based on the data obtained from the District Labor Office in Slupsk in Poland from 1999 to 2007.

To take into account the potential sample selection problem, i.e. to find an adequate control group for the group of trainees, we employ matching methods. Therefore we estimate a random–effects probit model for the likelihood to participate in a training program.

The main question of the paper is: does the training significantly raise the transition rate from unemployment into employment state in the short and long run?
