The Banking sector is one of the most vital between the 17 sectors of companies listed in the Stock Exchange,. The sector includes 15 banks of varying strategic importance to the Greek economy. Strategic groups are organizations within an industry sector, which have similar characteristics or/and follow similar strategies. The concept of strategic groups can explain sustained differences in financial results of particular companies within the sector. Furthermore, strategic groups offer solid basis for the in depth research of intergroup interactions, rivalry, processes of strategic change, strategic stability and convergence and dynamics of organizational behaviour.
This research identifies the variables for the analysis of formation of strategic groups in the banking sector, establish the division of these groups, and present comparisons based on scope of activity, resources and competences and finally possible mobility barriers.
