In this paper, we consider the Borda rule as a positionalist aggregation function for individual extended orderings and modify it to reflect considerations of equity. We describe results of investigations where students from several countries were confronted with questionnaires that describe hypothetical situations, most of which reflect different aspects of needs. Allsituations start from the preference structure which underlies an equity axiom based on Rawls’s theory of justice. We ask whether respondents satisfy the equity axiom, how often they revise their initial decision when more and more people join the side of the more advantaged, and whether there are major differences across countries and culture sand over time.
