Abstract

The goal of this study is to evaluate the benefits that companies have in the National Financial System (NFS), once they have good environmental practices as premise in the decision making process. This study uses the data analysis that is available in the Environmental Management Journal (EMJ, 2009) and the Credit Information System of the Central Bank of Brazil (CSR), to ascertain which variables affect the recognition of financial institutions to companies that incorporate in their production process environmental practices. It is understood that there is a historical context that approached the Financial System to the issues related to the degradation of the natural base. In addition, with the adoption of environmental criteria in risk analysis to provide credit to the companies, institutions will reduce the negative externalities resulting from the development, which promotes the release of credits. The NFS recognizes as companies with good environmental practices the ones that hold the ISO 14001 certification, and, further, the companies considered with “large scale” also have visibility outside the NFS. Through academic litarature, survey data and econometric analysis, the results showed that the recognition of companies by the NFS does not support environmental policies systematized. The reports publication that demonstrate the good environmental practice of enterprises, the maintenance of the degree of inclusion of new companies in the certification; the adherence to standards of other Series 14 000, and the monitoring of the environmental practices of suppliers, are necessary points to be evaluate in other research to maintain the effectiveness of the returns given to companies at the time, under-responsibility of the Financial System.
