The aim of this study is to present the factors influencing internationalisation of a currency and appraisal of the euro position in the world economy on the basis of two criteria: 1) the concept of international currency and 2) the concept of global currency. It is of special importance in the case of euro, because an evaluation constrained to the first concept, that is using the common currency only outside the EMU area, decreases its role in international economic relations.
